Kentucky Governor Bans Conversion Therapy with Executive Order
FRANKFORT, KY – In a significant move towards protecting LGBTQ+ youth, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has signed an executive order banning the controversial practice of conversion therapy for minors. The order, enacted on Thursday, aims to safeguard young individuals from harmful and discredited practices aimed at changing their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Governor Beshear’s executive order prohibits licensed healthcare providers from using conversion therapy on anyone under the age of 18. This action comes amid growing national awareness about the negative impacts of conversion therapy, which has been widely criticized by mental health professionals as both ineffective and damaging.
“Every Kentucky child deserves to grow up free from the fear of discrimination and harmful practices that can lead to serious emotional and psychological distress,” Governor Beshear stated during the announcement. "Today, we take a stand to protect our youth and affirm their identities."
The executive order aligns Kentucky with several other states taking similar measures to ban conversion therapy, amidst a broader national movement to ensure the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ individuals. Various studies have highlighted the high rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation among youth who have undergone conversion therapy, as opposed to those who receive supportive care.
In a showing of support, LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have praised the governor’s decision. “This is a huge step forward for LGBTQ+ rights in Kentucky,” said Chris Hartman, director of the Fairness Campaign. “No child should ever have to endure the trauma that conversion therapy brings. We commend Governor Beshear for prioritizing the well-being of our young people.”
The executive order will take effect immediately, with state agencies directed to implement and enforce the ban. Governor Beshear has expressed hope that this initiative will lead to further reforms aimed at protecting and empowering LGBTQ+ communities within the state.
As Kentucky embarks on this new chapter, many are looking ahead to see what further steps will be taken in the pursuit of equality and acceptance for all.
